Tabla
An Evening with Rimpa Siva — Tabla
We are thrilled to welcome Rimpa Siva — widely known as the Princess of Tabla, the title of the 1999 French documentary that brought her early artistry to international attention.
Born in 1986, she grew up in a tradition that has rarely welcomed women, and transformed it from the inside. A prodigy trained in the Farukhabad gharana by her father, Prof. Swapan Siva, she gave her first stage performance in Kolkata at the age of eight. She went on to earn her M.A. from Rabindra Bharati University, and brings to the tabla a combination of technical precision, spontaneity, and expressive power that is genuinely uncommon.
Her performances open with a long, meditative peshkar that gives way to an electrifying solo moving through gats, tukras, and relas with stunning clarity. The tabla in her hands is not accompaniment — it is the full voice of the evening.
Hailed by legends including Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and Pandit Kishen Maharaj, she is a recipient of the Indian Music Academy President Award and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. She will be accompanied by Shreyes Ravi on harmonium.
